Modern Lexus Safety Features
Nowadays, most customers have high expectations when it comes to vehicle safety. Airbags are no longer enough, and digital technology has introduced a range of high-tech features that can prevent a crash before it occurs. In light of this, auto manufacturers have seriously upgraded their security systems, and Lexus is at the front of the pack.
Lexus has recently introduced its Safety System + 3.0, bringing its vehicles even further into the future. Depending on the model, all new Lexus vehicles feature either Safety System +, Safety System + 2.5, or Safety System + 3.0. If you’re looking for a Lexus and value your own and your family’s safety, you’re in good hands. Keep reading to find out how Lexus is changing the auto safety game.
Lexus Safety System + 3.0
Lexus’ safety technology is entering its third generation with the Safety System + 3.0, which is available on the Lexus NX, RX, and RZ. This new suite of features includes many of the same technologies as previous systems but adds a few perks that are sure to delight safety-conscious customers.
Lexus designed its safety system with the goal of preventing the three most common types of accidents: nighttime accidents, frontal collisions, and unintended lane changes. The basic Lexus system includes the following four features to combat these incidents:
- Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection.
- Lane departure alert.
- Intelligent high beams.
- Dynamic radar cruise control.
Aside from these core features, the 2.0 and 2.5 systems include lane tracing assist and road sign assist. The current Safety System + 3.0 adds curve speed management and additional intersection support.
Structural Features
While electronic safety features are all the rage, there’s no substitute for solid engineering if you end up in a collision. Lexus designs all its vehicles with reinforced materials, crumple zones, and shock-dispersing zones to prevent injuries if an accident occurs. Additionally, Lexus vehicles have a sophisticated air bag system that includes both front and side curtain bags. The company uses a high-tech digital crash test application to collect millions of points of safety data and make necessary security adjustments.
Pre-Collision System
Lexus’ pre-collision system is the core of its safety suite. It uses advanced radar and camera features to detect obstructions to the front of the vehicle and can initiate evasive steering and braking to prevent a collision. The current version of the pre-collision system has features that allow it to detect pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vehicles in daylight and low-light conditions. The pre-collision system is standard on the IS, ES, LS, NX, RX, GX, LX, RC, RC F, LC, and UX models.
Lane Assistance
As mentioned above, involuntary lane departure is a major cause of accidents. Lexus has tackled this problem with its advanced lane assistance system that helps you stay centered and avoid accidents. This technology uses cameras to trace visible lane markers at speeds of 32 mph or higher. If your car starts to drift out of its lane, the system provides visual and audio alerts to warn you.
The latest versions of Lexus’ lane assistance technology include steering assist, which allows the vehicle to automatically correct drift and stay centered in its lane. Regular lane departure alert is standard on the GX, while the advanced version with steering assist comes standard on the NX, RX, IS, ES, RC, RC F, LS, LX, and UX models. Finally, pre-collision with lane departure alert, lane-keep assist, and steering assist is standard on the LC.
Intelligent High Beams
Good visibility is essential in low-light conditions, and Lexus’ intelligent high-beam system provides it. The goal of this feature is to prevent nighttime collisions and accidents in low-visibility conditions. The intelligent high-beam system activates your vehicle’s high beams when the road is clear and dims them automatically if the cameras detect a vehicle ahead of you. This feature is standard on the IS, ES, LS, UX, NX, RX, GX, LX, RC, RC F, and LC models.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
When you’re cruising down the highway or carrying out your daily commute, it can be easy to forget to keep an eye on traffic on the road ahead of you and notice any lulls or significant gaps. Luckily, one of Lexus’ latest safety features is dynamic radar cruise control, which ensures you maintain a safe and appropriate distance from the vehicle in front of you when you’re behind the wheel.
This technology uses a camera and a millimeter-wave radar sensor to detect when the vehicle in front of you comes to a stop and automatically brings your Lexus to a halt safely. Then, when the car you’re following begins to drive again, your Lexus will follow suit, and take off along the road again from a safe distance. This allows you to rest assured that your vehicle will help you keep yourself and other drivers safe on highways and along busy roads.
Road Sign Assist
Road sign assist is another feature to help you feel secure behind the wheel, even when exploring unfamiliar roads. This technology can recognize traffic signs and uses a multi-information display to provide you with the information you need. When you also utilize your Lexus’ dynamic radar cruise control, it’ll work with road sign assist to slow your vehicle down to the local speed limit for you, helping you stay focused on what’s in front of you.
