5 Shows Coming to OKC This Winter

Oklahoma City, a premier destination for performing arts, enchants us with its offering of majestic productions this winter. An impressive line-up of timeless ballet, famous theater productions, breathtaking cirque artists, and more show-stopping performances light up the stage this holiday season. OKC Ballet’s “The Nutcracker”

OKC Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” is back this winter with opulent sets and enchanting and spirited scores of Tchaikovsky. Artistic director Ryan Jolicoeur-Nye presents all-new choreography. This vibrant and extravagant ballet takes the stage at the civic center music hall again this holiday season. “The Nutcracker” promises compelling dance performances to a live musical repertoire from Canterbury Voices and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

The ballet will inspire you through uplifting dance performances and community service. This winter sees its first-ever sensory-friendly version of the magical family tradition, “The Nutcracker.” Accommodations for the sensory-friendly performance include adjusted lighting and sound, lower sound levels throughout the performance, reduced strobe lighting, and no live orchestra or pyrotechnics. The sensory performance plays on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, only. “The Nutcracker” is a magical way for you and your family to celebrate the season.

Lyric’s “A Christmas Carol”

Oklahoma’s favorite Victorian Christmas ghost story, Lyric’s “A Christmas Carol” , returns for its 12th year. This timeless Charles Dickens tale is an unforgettable adventure of redemption. It reminds us to keep Christmas, a season of looking after the less fortunate, in our hearts all year. Oklahoma City’s finest and most well-known performers spark the holiday spirit in all ages in this magnificent production.

Lyric presents a non-traditional walk-through experience at the Harn Homestead, a beautiful outdoor museum on the doorstep of the Oklahoma Capitol building. The venue holds all performances outdoors, and you can walk from scene to scene during the 75-minute production. Consider stocking up on hand warmers and layering up, but don’t bring more than you can carry. The show is double cast, with Jonathan Beck Reed performing the lead role for the first three weeks and W. Jerome Stevenson for the last three weeks.

OKC Broadway’s “A Magical Cirque Christmas”

OKC Broadway’s “A Magical Cirque Christmas” is a spell-binding and extraordinary holiday production. The story jumps through time, accompanied by holiday music from each period. The show visits the classic Victorian 1890s, the roaring jazz age of the 1920s, the booming rock era of the 1950s, and the funky music of the 1970s.

The Christmas tale begins as the guardian of time manages the changing of the seasons with his giant magical clock and finds himself unhappy about the countdown to the 2022 holidays. A magical fairy, played by the comedic magician Lucy Darling, tries to help but causes time to diverge when she breaks the clock. The performance will mesmerize you with talent and showmanship as hostess Lucy Darling takes you through an evening of breathtaking cirque artists and your favorite holiday music. Daring circus acts provide a perfect date night experience or a fun-filled family outing.

Josh Turner “King Size Manger” Tour

Josh Turner’s “King Size Manger” Tour this winter at The Criterion music venue in the Bricktown District of Oklahoma City will excite you if you’re a die-hard country music fan. You’ll enjoy hearing Turner’s velvet voice singing toe-tapping Christmas classics. His musical arrangement is inventive and includes a mix of traditional country music, Christmas classics, and Hawaiian tunes. He wrote three of the four original songs and arranged five tracks on the 11-song album. The “King Size Manger” Tour promises a family-friendly performance of beloved holiday songs and a few well-loved hits from yesteryear.

The headlining artists attract a flux of entry so consider arriving early to minimize standing in long entrance queues. If you can, bring a waterproof jacket, as it often rains at this time of year. Cold weather zaps phone batteries, so keep yours in a warm spot close to your body and consider switching it to airplane mode once you’re inside the venue.

OKC Broadway’s “Cats”

OKC Broadway’s “Cats” is a breathtaking musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This highly acclaimed show transports you into a fantasy world with a tribe of cats who gather for an annual ball. The story is about accepting one another despite our differences in appearance. “Cats| showcases the magic of the theater with singing, music, dancing, acrobatics, costumes, and imagination.

This season’s adaptation of “Cats” features an all-new sound and lighting design and choreography but enjoys the original musical score and scenic and costume design. The musical genius of Andrew Lloyd Webber delivers memorable music that captivates audiences of all ages. The human-sized cats transfix children, and the energetic dance routines captivate teenagers and adults alike.
